In May the annual US car meeting took place in Hamburg. It's one of Germany's biggest meetings for US Cars, it's organized by "Street" our number 1 magazine for old V8s and cruising. Got my first car aging 15 - you only get a drivers license over here when you are 18. It was a white 1987 Scirocco Scala with little front damage that our next door neighboor sold me for 1 German Mark (would be 50 Euro Cents or 75 US Cents today). I drove it on a nearby farmer's field until we nearly ran out of gas. My mother went nuts when she got to know about, so I cleand the car up, "repared" the front damage with a sladge hammer and sold it 48 hours later for 100 German...

My Father was a Salesman and had to travel his district extensively by car. Up until 1970, all Salesmen in his company drove their own cars and just filled out milage sheets and so on. After that, the company decided it was better just to lease the car and let the leaseor take care of maintence and so on.

Now understand that I'm all for selling new cars and getting the auto folks back to work and such. It's great for the dealers and those they serve also. But I saw an AP photo in my local bird cage liner that has just gotten to me. I just parted with an 18 model-year old Toyata truck that only had about 165 K on her (In Toyota terms, she was just a kid...).
